Synopsis

Kumu & Lamu's Forest Adventure: A Journey into the Rainforests of Papua New Guinea

is the first title in the Masthan Adventure Series, an educational children's book series developed by PNG University of Technology Press to promote literacy, environmental awareness, and an appreciation of Papua New Guinea's rich natural heritage.

Written for children in the early primary years, the story follows two best friends, Kumu and Lamu, as they explore their local rainforest and encounter some of Papua New Guinea's most remarkable wildlife, including the cassowary, tree kangaroo, green tree python, spotted cuscus, rainbow lorikeet, fruit bat, and the iconic bird-of-paradise. Along their journey, young readers discover the importance of forests, biodiversity, and caring for the natural environment through simple language, engaging illustrations, and age-appropriate storytelling.

The book is complemented by a practical Teacher and Parent Guide that supports reading comprehension, vocabulary development, classroom discussion, and environmental learning. Designed for use in schools, homes, libraries, and community reading programmes, the publication encourages children to develop confidence in reading while fostering curiosity, respect for nature, and pride in Papua New Guinea's unique environment.
